Sunday 3/22/09 Lacrosse game

Another busy day for Alex and Grandpa
we traveled 45 minutes east for his 4th official Lacrosse game. We arrived at the game 5 minutes prior to the start...and Alex informed me that he had forgotten part of his equipment.....I simply said "Tell your coach"
He did and was able to use someone elses It was only a protective glove....But he still forgot it.
The game was fun to watch Alex played quite a bit ...We Won 3-2.
Afterwards we hit Steak and Shake...Alex likes to dip french fries in chocolate shakes YUK! Once we got home we grabbed his basketball pumped it up with air and went looking for a court to practice.

Once on the court I began instructions on shooting layups...We practiced simple layup shots for 1 hr straight..."grandpa my arms are tired" ..."yea I know but this is what practice is all about Alex"....."Just keeping hitting the square over the hoop and it will always go in"

He did pretty good He likes basketball!

Next tournament game Weds

March Madness BBall Tourney starts

Well

Here it is 5PM Saturday afternoon and Alex is suited up for his first ever ball tournament game. His team Woodland Elementary is playing against Van Gordan Elementary. All 4th graders . Actually one of his football teammates Drake is on VanGorden...This will be interesting especially since Alex and his teammates hardly ever pay attention in practice. They are usually more concerned about taking wild shots and dribbling behind their back.
Well on a positive note Stephanie is here for support along with Payton. Terri and KK even showed up.........

The game begins Alex is the starting point guard...Both 4th grade teams were kind of disoriented and the score remained 0 -0 for what seemed like forever I was standing up a screaming like a old high school coach " Dribble low! hands up on D" pass it pass it pass it hustle back" The standard basketball stuff. however within a few more times up and down the court..Alex had stolen a pass and taken a shot .. NOTHING BUT NET straight in.... I screamed like a baby! "That a boy Alex" He did it, he made the first basket of the game ...can you believe it ,Alex made the first basket, the same Alex that doesn't seem to even understand the game, the same Alex that hates to practice..the same Alex that cant concentrate on any one thing for 2 minutes...He did it and that set the pace 1/2 time we were ahead 10 -0 ...At the half I was on the floor with the boys instructing them on how to keep going and how great they were doing...for the remainder of the game I watched Alex intently so that I could critique his balling afterwards...to my surprise he did pretty darn good for never playing before. He handles the ball OK for a 4th grade point guard...He hustles OK...plays defense OK...Not the best but not the worst.
Well we won the game 15 -3 and we move on in the tourney ...next game is Weds This tournament is lose one you are out.
By the way I did not critique him that much I told him he was AWESOME but to pass it more and trust that the ball will eventually come back to you. Grandpa knows these things ...its called
grandpa basketball wisdom!

I gave him a snack, a big HUG as he was on his way to a birthday party of a football teammate. I get a break...Stephanie and Payton were taking him..

Next adventure Sunday 12 noon LaCrosse game against Wyoming.

LaCrosse Game 2 Sunday Mar 8

Alex had his second lacrosse game today . They lost 6 -4 Alex did pretty well..played 2 different positions on the field. Middie, and attack position. You would need to know the game to understand...dont sweat it.
The weather was better than previous games therefore he could wear his shorts. The game lasted about 1 hr and he was on the field most of the time..running,poking and hitting boys with the lacrosse stick...a couple times he actually had the ball and passed it. Its a learning process and he's learning. So am I!
I must mention it was a real challenge today because when I arrived to pick him up for the game this morning...he wasn't home,he had spent the night with a friend and had forgotten about the game...needless to say I addressed this issue with him on the ride to the game...all the way to the game. At least we were not late.
After the game he came over and helped me paint the outside trim of my house...nothing dangerous only over the front door. He loved it. On the way home we dropped by grandma Terri's and got some roast beef and mashed potatoes with gravy..very good stuff.

Oh yea I forgot to mention we won our 1st game a few weeks back against Wyoming.
score 3-2.
